Castles were built during ancient times and were used to house the elite and also serve as a fort. The Berry Pomeroy Castle is a castle that is covered in legend and mystery. The castle was built by the Pomeroy family in the 15th century, with only the castle walls remaining their successors the Seymour family built a mansion within the original walls, the construction of the structure was never finished and remains in ruins up to this day. This is actually a mansion within a castle. This castle is worth the trip coming from any of the nearby holiday cottages in the area and especially while you are enjoying your Brixham holidays.



Compton Castle



This castle is actually a fortified Manor but is in pristine condition. After travelling through a path of trees and greenery you will reach a clearing and then this picturesque medieval building emerges with all its splendour. This Castle reminds you of a fairy tale because it is tucked away in South Devon. The holiday cottages are the accommodations of choice for most tourists and Brixham holidays are well spent on a trip Compton, the six hundred year old home of the Gilbert family. The Gilberts are the relatives of the famous Sir Walter Raleigh. The castle was used as the location for the movie "Sense and Sensibility" which proves how grand of a castle it truly is. This majestic castle is only a few miles away from the holiday cottages in Brixham which makes it the most accessible. Many of the holiday cottages were built some time ago and the architecture of some of these lodgings reflect the architecture of the time of the aristocrats which makes them wonderful places to spend your vacation.
